Webmailer - makes mailto: links open in your webmail
August 2, 2008 @ 16:34
Ever since I switched over to Gmail as my primary interface for manipulating e-mail, I have been bothered by mailto: links opening up Apple Mail when following them. Then I found Webmailer.
Webmailer is a preference pane for Mac OS X that lets you redirect any mailto: link to a custom URL or to an application/script, with the possibility to use parameters from the original mailto: link. This is almost as good as sliced bread - it means that I can redirect any mailto: link to open up the Gmail webmail interface.
If Google is hosting your mail for your domain, all you have to do is to add an URL formatted like this in Webmailer’s preference pane (I’m using https here, but http will do just as good):
https://mail.google.com/a/yourdomain.com/?view=cm&fs=1&tf=1&to=[to]&su=[subject]&body=[body]
Webmailer comes with some predefined webmail services, so chances are pretty good that you’ll find something that works for you out of the box. Happy mailing.
